Sailing: Durban to Seychelles Yacht Race

Durban to Seychelles yacht race on the cards

A yacht race between Durban and Seychelles could be introduced by as early as September 2015, according to Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism & Culture, Alain St. Ange.

Speaking at Indaba, St. Ange said that preliminary discussions had been held between Seychelles and KwaZulu-Natal regarding the feasibility of the race.

It is expected to generate interest in the region and signal that piracy is on the wane, says St. Ange. “Motivation for organising such a race has been in existence for some time but has been given added impetus by the advent of the Vanilla Islands and latterly the East3Route partnership between Seychelles, Mozambique, Swaziland and Kwazulu-Natal,” He added.

The race is expected to take place every second year, with the start line alternating between Seychelles and Durban. Early plans for the race involve a post-competition mini-regatta around the islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

St. Ange says the idea is to begin the race with between 10 and 15 vessels and to attract some high profile entries to garner greater participation over the long term.   |
